Why Use Component Based LED Lighting?
When designing a new lighting project there are many factors to consider in the build which always include: what color temperature to use (CCT), what wattage for the correct brightness, which product will solve my needs? In today’s lighting world there are some additional considerations that, up until 7-8 years ago weren’t there. Technology advancements in LED lighting have created a recent increase in products that allow more creativity, or ability to design specifically to a particular vision. The KLUS company is a leading developer of such products. Through the use of aluminum extrusions and component-based lighting (flexible LED strip), KLUS has created a line of products that emphasizes the word “design” when referencing the Lighting Design profession. Designers and consumers are no longer forced to use a standard 24”, 32”, or 48” prebuilt fixture where you just have to make it work for your space but instead create something that falls exactly in your design vision. Through the use of aluminum extrusions and LED lighting components, a 37 ½” space can now have exactly that size fixture. Components give the freedom to cut the extrusions, diffusers and the LED to fill the space in question exactly. The idea of filling space with light provides a more natural illumination of a space rather than chopped up sections of light. The nice part is, if the design scope changes to needing highlighted small areas or sections of that same space, due to the versatility of the component based build, those changes can be made to the scope of design on a moments notice, not requiring a completely new option in the lighting, saving time and money. One unique feature that the KLUS company provides is the ability to maintain the versatility of the component-based product by customizing a specified fixture build. The KLUS team can aid in design decisions and product suggestions when looking for the correct LED components in an application and build, providing a finished fixture to specifications which will fit exactly in the space it is needed, as opposed to that cookie cutter style lighting that is forced to be used regardless of your original vision of the project. This again lets you make fixtures that are to an exact size, color temperature and wattage using the vast range of KLUS led profiles and led accessories without the need to build in the field, only to mount and connect to your low voltage power. Many commercial buildings and residences are now being designed with component based lighting. Utilizing a component based lighting and creating a more free form of design has resulted in much more creative ideas and views on how lighting can be used to design a space. The PIKO-O LED Lighting Extrusion
KLUS designers are always busy designing new, streamlined, cutting-edge lighting solutions for our clients. Our LED lighting extrusions and accessories blend beautifully with the architectural details, furniture, or features of any area of living or workspace. The look, feel, integration, and functionality, that our LED lighting products provide are difficult, if not impossible, to achieve with old-style bulky light bulbs and fixtures. One of our newest LED lighting extrusion is the PIKO-O. This fixture is a very small round extrusion dedicated to be suspended with the use of electricity conductive end caps. The PIKO-O is compatible with 0.19″/ 5 mm wide LED strips, and is available in silver or black. [Show slideshow]
A Clean Line of Light
Component based LED lighting allows the designer to create some truly unique projects, far beyond what can be done with the standard troffer/can lighting. Just take a look at the photo above this article, for an example; for more information on the referenced project, take a look at our homepage at https://klusdesign.com/. When looking to create that amazing look, the first question may be, where to begin? Our first question tends to be, where the LED lighting is going to be placed; is it going to be in direct view or is it going to be indirect view? For this article, we’re going to go with the first of those two options, and say it will be in direct view. Here in the US, one of the more important features of LED lighting in direct view, is to achieve “a clean line of light” or in other words, no visible diodes from the LED tape light inside the fixture. Distilling this design constraint down to its basic components produces: Cones of Light and Covers. Expanding on these two characteristics gives us four elements of control when designing a fixture: Cover type, LED spacing, LED output, and Cover to LED spacing. Cover type – There are many types of covers, each with specific design features for different applications. In this section, lenses and covers are used interchangeably. Generally, the two types of lenses include clear or frosted. Clear lenses can be immediately excluded from this discussion, since our focus is not to see the diodes. Of the frosted lenses, their material compositions and features may vary. The combination may be to maximize light diffusion, to minimize UV light damage/transmission, or to provide a low-cost option. Since our goal is to get a clean line of light, we’ll want to select a frosted cover that will maximize light diffusion. LED spacing (shown above) – This refers to the distance each individual diode, on the LED tape, sits from one another. This is provided in the LEDs spec-sheet or cut-sheet in a couple of different ways: as diodes per foot value or as a measurement (inches or mm). As shown above (left), there are two diodes spaced so that their cones of light do not overlap at the cover. They instead create a void of light at the cover. A higher diode per foot count (right) shows the cones of light overlapping at the cover. Overlapping cones of light at the cover will help produce the clean line of light look. LED output – This can be measured in either a lumen per foot value or a wattage per foot value. In most cases, with LED tape lighting, the two are linked. Without getting into the physics of light and how a higher output affects the cone, we’re going to generalize from averages, that as the output level is increased, the cone of light will grow wider. As the output lever is lowered, the cone of light will recede. Cover to LED spacing – This refers to the distance the cover sits from the LED tape inside the LED fixture. From the image above, it can be shown that keeping all things equal (LED spacing, Cover type, and LED output) as you vary the distance from the cover to the LEDs the product of light can be modified from overlapping (left) to voids (right). Now that we have presented the four elements that govern the clean line of light, we can provide our go to solution to achieve this look. Here at Klus, the cover that maximizes the light diffusion the best, is our Liger Frosted lens. Our highest diode per foot LED tapes, currently come with 81 diodes per foot (K-1820-HD-24V or K-1910-HD-24V), and they also have great output values. With three of the four elements optimized, using the above, a clean line of light can be achieved with any of our extrusions (extrusions the utilize covers). For projects that require crisscrossing lights, as shown at the beginning of this article, please contact our technical department for additional recommendations.

Advantages of MLV Dimming with LED Lighting Systems
When thinking about what types of drivers to use in LED lighting project, it’s a good idea to evaluate the different options that are available. For constant voltage LED lighting systems there are a few options that can be considered: Non-Dimming (on/off), Magnetic Low Voltage Dimming (MLV), 0-10V Dimming, and Electronic Low Voltage Dimming (ELV). For this short introduction, we will be discussing the benefits for using MLV dimming with your LED lighting project. One of the more attractive benefits to MLV dimming would be its ease of installation. These drivers only require a single line-voltage wire to be provided from the dimmer switch, and one to the low voltage wire from the LED lights. Some other dimming options require more wire connections back to the dimmer switch and elsewhere. Klus MD-Series MLV drivers entire covering acts as a built-in junction box, with the driver, to make both line-voltage and low voltage connections using standard 7/8ths knockouts. It is often asked what kind of dimmer switch to use with the MLV driver. The good news is, you can connect them to a common Triac dimmer switch, leading edge/forward phase. These are available at most home improvement centers that carry electrical switches. Another attractive benefit to MLV drivers is their low inrush current. Inrush current is the initial rush of power through a system when it is initially turned on. The lower inrush current of MLV drivers makes it easier to select the right panel components, or to even use the existing panel components. Some other LED drivers, with higher inrush currents, may require special panel components to be used to handle the spike in current, when the LED lights are turned on. If the power system being utilized is 120VAC line voltage or 277VAC line voltage, we have it covered. The KLUS MLV drivers are available in 12VDC or 24VDC output for either line-voltage configuration; and come in the following power options: 20W, 40W, 60W, 96W (20-96 are class 2), 150W, 200W, and 300W. Best of all, we can help you choose what version/configuration to use and even provide you with a suggestion in wire gauge to run from the driver to LED light.
